With the new Xiaomi REDMI 5a, Xiaomi brings to the table another price for the smartphones-a segment in which it reveals itself. The successor of the REDMI 4a launched in March this year, the Xiaomi REDMI 5a is almost the same device, and you would have trouble finding a significant difference between the two.
I spent time with the REDMI 5a before the launch, and here are my first thoughts about the same thing.
Xiaomi REDMI 5a Specs
OS: Android 7.1 with MIUI 9

The REDMI 5a looks like the quintessence of the Xiaomi smartphone, similar to many REDMI phones that we have seen in the past. There is nothing new, and that is not a bad thing.
The Xiaomi REDMI 5a features a polycarbonate body with a metallic matte finish that looks polished. It’s all plastic, yes, but it doesn’t seem cheap. With a 5-inch screen and 8.35 mm thick, it’s a compact smartphone that fits comfortably in your hand.
One of the prominent omissions on the Xiaomi REDMI 5a is a biometric scanner. While these are increasingly ubiquitous on smartphones, same budget, it’s just cutting corners in a smartphone at that price.
Xiaomi has finally listened to requests for a voice that does niche prefer the hybrid SIM tray and the 5a Redmi comes with a slot for 2 + 1 card allows you to use what are the two nano sim and a MicroSD card to extend the storage all at once.
The Xiaomi REDMI 5a has a fully laminated 5-inch (1280 × 720) IPS HD display that offers good color reproduction and good contrast. It’s duller than what Xiaomi offers on its more expensive smartphone, and dynamism is a victim of the price. The text and the images are sharp, so there is no complaint on this front.
There is also a reading mode that reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the screen to avoid eye fatigue at night or during long reading sessions.
Like its predecessor, the REDMI 4a is powered by the Quad-core chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 associated with 2 GB of RAM. There are 16 GB of internal storage, which can be extended up to 128 GB using a MicroSD card. There is also a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
The Snapdragon 425 is a good choice at this price as it has enough muscle for a decent Android experience and is quite effective. The performance is good enough for a budget smartphone and multi-tasking and browsing the Web have been quite smooth-although I have really not tried in many scenarios with the real world a multitude of third-party applications that one would do generally.
The initial impressions were rather good and promising, but several budget smartphones with limited bowels tend to have a performance after 6 months or more. I will dive into it when I take the camera for a long time for full overhaul.
The Xiaomi REDMI 5a is powered by a battery of 3000 mah below, which is less than 3 120 mah found on the Xiaomi REDMI 4a but enough for what should be a day battery life.
The Xiaomi REDMI 5a Works MIUI 9 which is based on Android 7.1 Nougat. There is no word on the calendar for the Android O upgrade since Xiaomi prefers to maintain its cycle of upgrades defined by the versions of MIUI.
While the Android skins are a matter of personal preference and as several users just prefer to store Android, MIUI is quite popular. MIUI 9 offers one of the most intuitive and functional user interfaces, and there are some nifty utilities and tools that enhance the Android experience as a whole.
In the photography department, the REDMI 4a offers a 13 megapixel rear snapper with the aperture of f/2.2 and phase detection autofocus (PDAF). On the front, there is an improved 5-megapixel camera with aperture f/2.0.
While I reserve my judgment on the camera until the review, some tests in broad daylight have come out for a phone at that price. There is nothing exceptional about the camera according to the initial tests, just that it’s better than most competitors so a fair win for Xiaomi in the segment.

Best Redmi 5A Alternatives
The 2 GB + 16 GB version of the Xiaomi REDMI 5a is priced at $4999 ($78), while the 3 GB + 32 GB variant is sold at a price of Rs6999 ($109). The price of the lower variant is updated for the first million units, after which the price will be Rs 5 999, but for these five million customers, this is a bargain.
The Xiaomi REDMI 5a is not an upgrade to other budget smartphones from Xiaomi released this year, but a well-balanced budget smartphone for the time that would sell very well. It’s an affordable package that offers a decent smartphone experience without too much compromise. You get what you pay for, right?
